The basis of the global hotel business, its foundation is currently a hotel chain. It is in them that standards of service and hotel management are formed, innovations are introduced.
Today in the world you can distinguish about several hundred different hotel chains. The networks have various scales: there are giant corporations whose hotels are located in all corners of the earth, there are smaller and very small chains, including 3-5 hotels. The names of the largest hotel chains are heard by tourists. A rare person who is not even keen on travel has not heard of such brands as Radisson, Best Western, Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton.
Small hotel chains are much less well known. However, both a huge and a small network have their own traditions, rules and standards of service.
If you believe the reports of the World Tourism Organization, this or that hotel chain owns every fifth hotel in the world. Considering that there are about 16 million hotels on the planet, it turns out that more than 3 million of them are part of the network.
Despite the centuries-old history of the hotel business, the emergence of hotel chains is a relative innovation generated by globalization. The first hotel chains originated in the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century. To this day, America holds the lead in the number of hotels included in a particular network. It is hard to believe, but more than 70% of all hotels in the USA are part of hotel chains.
The hotel chain market is currently at the final stage of its formation. Networks penetrate vertically from the most expensive to increasingly budget hotels. If in the niche of five-star hotels the business is already divided between the key hotel chains, which we mentioned above, then the three-star hotel chains are actively developing.
Growing demand creates supply. Thus, the popularity of Bed and Breakfast hotels among modern tourists has led to the active development of such hotel chains. To one of the latest inventions of the world tourism industry – agrotourism – they also managed to create their own hotel chains. Such hotels are widespread in Italy, England, Spain, Portugal.
If we talk about domestic business, in Russia by the present moment several large hotel chains have been formed. Among them are the Heliopark chain, which owns hotels in the Moscow region, as well as the Azimut hotel chain, whose hotels can be found in St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Samara and other Russian cities.
